Senior Mechanical Engineer

Carterra is a fast-growing life science bio-tech technology company located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our products allow researchers to identify potential targets early in the drug discovery process where risks and costs can be significantly mitigated.

Job Summary:

Carterra is looking for a seasoned Mechanical Engineer to join our new product development team to design products in the life sciences industry.

Here are Carterra, you will develop complex instrumentation used for measuring biomolecular interactions. This includes automated fluid / sample handling mechanisms, sample preparation and sample delivery mechanisms that consist of fluidic controls, motion controls, opt-mechanics, and thermal control systems. This role will be onsite and very hands on.


  • Work through the development process of concept / design / test.
  • Be very hands on with the instrumentation. Run tests as needed, become very familiar with the system as a whole.
  • Keep detailed notes and documentation to support findings and decisions with data.
  • Communicate engineering findings during meetings as needed.
  • Assist in new product development activities including CAD designs, hands on testing documentation, and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Create a positive working environment around you.
  • Responsible for meeting deadlines and reaching beyond the “job description” at times to get things done.
  • Responsible with following through on designs by testing and working with test groups to ensure product requirements are met.
  • Work with manufacturing departments to ensure all needs are met for transfer to manufacturing activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Education: BS or MS in Engineering
  • 15+ years of demonstrated experience designing instrumentation in the life science industry.
  • Experience defining and developing test strategies for V&V
  • Proficient in Solidworks 2020 or later.
  • Experience designing systems for manufacturability and reliability.
  • Willing to wear many hats as needed in a small company.
  • Ability to work well and communicate with other interdisciplinary engineers.
  • History of mentoring younger engineers.
  • Experience working within quality systems.
  • High degree of accountability and ownership to get the job done.


    • Able to lift 25 lbs.
    • Able to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, standing, and twisting in performance of tasks.
